Ram ProMaster Cargo Van

Importing a used RAM ProMaster Cargo Van from the USA

The RAM ProMaster is North America's take on a European original: under the badge sits the Fiat Ducato, re-engineered by Stellantis for the US market and sold there since the 2014 model year. That makes it an unusual import candidate. A German buyer looking at a used ProMaster is essentially buying a familiar large panel van with US-market equipment, US mileage habits and, crucially, a build history that decides how it is treated at the border. If you want to import a used RAM ProMaster from the USA, the drivetrain layout, roof-and-wheelbase combination and the VIN plant code all matter more than the paint.

Model history: years and generations

The ProMaster arrived for 2014 as a rebadged Ducato (internally X250, later X290). Unlike the Chevrolet Express or Ford E-Series it replaced conceptually, it broke with the American body-on-frame, rear-drive tradition entirely. A major mid-cycle refresh landed for the 2022 model year: a revised 3.6-litre Pentastar V6, a new nine-speed automatic, a digital instrument cluster and Uconnect 5 with a large touchscreen. From 2024 an all-electric ProMaster EV joined the range. For used import, the pre-2022 and post-2022 cars feel like two different vans inside, even though the shell is shared.

Engines, transmissions and drive

The defining trait is front-wheel drive with a transverse engine. Early cars (2014–2018) offered a choice of the 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 petrol, roughly 280 hp paired to a 62TE six-speed automatic, or a 3.0-litre EcoDiesel four-cylinder turbo (around 174 hp) with an automated manual. Chrysler dropped the diesel after 2018, so the vast majority of US used stock is the petrol V6. The 2022 refresh kept the Pentastar (about 276 hp) but moved to the 948TE nine-speed automatic. Front drive gives a low, flat load floor and good traction when loaded, but an empty ProMaster in snow can spin its front wheels more readily than a rear-drive rival.

Equipment lines and body styles

ProMaster is sold as a cargo van, a window van, a chassis cab and a cutaway. Cargo versions come in 1500, 2500 and 3500 GVWR ratings, with standard and high roofs and wheelbases of 118, 136 and 159 inches (plus a 159-inch extended body). High-roof models allow an adult to stand inside — a big reason upfitters and tradespeople choose it over lower American vans. US trims are simple: it is bought by specification (roof, length, payload) rather than by luxury grade.

The US used market

ProMasters are everywhere in US commercial fleets — delivery, plumbing, mobile-service and camper-conversion use. That means plenty of choice but also plenty of hard-worked examples. Typical used stock runs from 2015 to 2023 with anything from 30,000 to well over 150,000 miles. Fleet-maintained V6 vans in the 40,000–90,000-mile band tend to be the sweet spot. Camper conversions are increasingly common and can be immaculate, but a converted van needs its build documented for German approval. Rust is generally modest on southern and western cars; road-salt states are riskier.

Is an import right for you?

This van suits a buyer who specifically wants a tall, front-drive cargo box with a car-like driving position and a proven Ducato mechanical base, or someone importing a US camper conversion they have already found. Because the ProMaster is closely related to the European Ducato, spare parts and know-how exist on this side of the Atlantic, which lowers the long-term ownership risk compared with a purely American van. It is less suited to buyers who need factory all-wheel drive — the ProMaster has never offered it.

Common issues buyers should know

The mechanical base is well understood, but the ProMaster has recurring weak spots worth checking. On petrol vans the 62TE six-speed transmission can develop rough shifts and solenoid faults with high fleet mileage; fluid history matters. The 2014–2018 EcoDiesel adds diesel-specific concerns — DEF/emissions faults, EGR and injector issues — and is harder to service. Across the range, wheel bearings, front suspension bushings and dashboard rattles are common on high-mileage examples. Uconnect and reversing-camera glitches appear on older infotainment. Because it is front-drive, uneven front tyre wear can flag alignment or overloading. None of this is unusual for a working van, but a documented service record is the single most valuable thing a used ProMaster can carry.

Differences from the European version

US ProMasters run amber front indicators integrated differently from EU norms, US-spec rear lighting, miles-per-hour clusters and, on older cars, no rear fog lamp. Tyre-pressure monitoring and daytime running lights are US-calibrated. The Ducato relationship helps: many mechanical parts cross-reference to the European van, though North-American-specific electronics and trim do not always match. For registration, the lighting and instrumentation are the usual conversion points.

Import step by step

The path runs: select the right roof/wheelbase/payload for your use, then verify VIN and build plant, agree terms through escrow, book roll-on/roll-off or container ocean freight, clear EU customs on arrival, present the van for TÜV and individual approval (Einzelabnahme), and finally register it. A commercial van often needs its N1 classification and, for conversions, the camper build documented.

Customs and taxes: what applies

In short: the 0% duty rate applies only with documented US origin (VIN/plant) – German import VAT of 19% is always due.

The ProMaster is assembled in Saltillo, Mexico, so its VIN typically begins with 3 — a Mexican build. That matters: the 0% EU import duty available for provable US-origin vehicles under Regulations (EU) 2026/1455 and 2026/1461 applies only when the plant/VIN confirms US origin. A Mexican-built ProMaster generally will not qualify, and the standard third-country customs rate for goods vehicles then applies. On top of the duty, the 19% German import VAT (Einfuhrumsatzsteuer) is charged separately and always applies, regardless of origin. As an independent broker we never promise duty-free status — the VIN and plant decide.

Modifications and single-vehicle approval

Typical work for German approval covers rear fog lamp fitment, headlight and indicator conversion to EU spec, a speedometer that reads km/h, and confirmation that any camper or shelving conversion is safely mounted and documented. The odometer usually needs no change but its reading is recorded. High-roof vehicle-height figures must be confirmed for the papers.

What to verify before buying

Check the VIN and plant code so you know the customs treatment before you buy. Pull a full Carfax or AutoCheck history for accident and fleet records. Inspect the underbody for road-salt corrosion. Confirm transmission service history on petrol vans and full DEF/emissions health on diesels. Verify the exact roof height and wheelbase match your needs. On conversions, get the build documentation. Confirm the title is clean, not salvage or rebuilt.

Common questions

Is the RAM ProMaster the same as a Fiat Ducato?

Yes, mechanically. It is a US-market Ducato re-engineered by Stellantis, which is good news for European parts and servicing.

Does the ProMaster have all-wheel drive?

No. It has always been front-wheel drive. If you need AWD, this van cannot provide it from the factory.

Will a used ProMaster qualify for 0% EU import duty?

Usually not, because it is built in Mexico. Origin is decided by the VIN and plant, and only provable US origin enables the 0% rate.

Does the 19% import VAT always apply?

Yes. The German Einfuhrumsatzsteuer of 19% is charged on every import, separately from any customs duty.

Which engine is easier to import and run?

The 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 petrol is the most common and the simpler choice; the 2014–2018 EcoDiesel needs more emissions attention.

Can I import a US camper conversion?

Yes, but the conversion must be documented and pass individual approval; undocumented builds complicate TÜV.

What mileage is realistic?

Many fleet vans sit between 40,000 and 90,000 miles with good records — a sensible target band.

Does USCar Trader sell the van directly?

No. We are an independent broker and intermediary for used US vehicles; we do not act as a dealer or carry a margin on the vehicle.
